Sui Airdrop Season Started - Testnet Wave 2 Is Live! 🌊

Recently Sui, a new layer-1 blockchain that is one of the most promising new blockchains of 2023, has announced that they are on testnet. As soon as a blockchain is on testnet, snapshots for future airdrops are possible - and often common practice. Remember the Aptos airdrop that I covered here on BENNY KONG back in September 2022?
Exactly - the thing happened on testnet! Participants who claimed an Aptos Testnet NFT were later on rewarded with 150 APT Tokens when the Aptos blockchain went live in October 2022. Current value (as of time of writing): 2000 Dollar!
Although Sui Network has already announced that no airdrop is planned, I’d like to share with you what I did to position myself in case there will be an airdrop. Try to accomplish the 4 highlighted test cases in Testnet Wave 2 rather soon, as the Testnet Wave 2 might be only open for 2-3 weeks. I’m speculating that by end of February 2023 the timeframe has passed.
Remember: All of these thoughts are just assumptions and should not be taken as financial advice. It’s just what I do. A random dude on the Internet.
Everything we are doing here is a best guess approach - based on previous airdrops in other ecosystems, such as Ethereum, Avalanche or lately the aforementioned Aptos airdrop. Usually airdrops will not be announced ahead - they just happen.
So let’s see if one is happening for Sui (https://sui.io/) and we will be lucky. Let’s get into it.
Get Your First Sui Testnet Tokens in your Wallet!
First we need to get some Sui Testnet Tokens to play around. And a Sui compatible wallet. I’m currently using Sui Wallet as well as Suiet Wallet, but the tutorial is based on Sui Wallet.
Step 1: Download Sui Wallet as an extension for your chromium-based browser, such as Google Chrome or Brave, directly from the google web store: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/sui-wallet/opcgpfmipidbgpenhmajoajpbobppdil
Step 2: Apply the crypto 101 for setting up wallets!
Use a fresh password that you have never used for any other application before and save your private key accordingly. Meaning:
No copy-paste into your email or digital notes app, no photo. Good old pen and paper and you are good to go.
And remember: No one will ever ask you for this private key again. You only will need it, when you want to set up the same wallet for instance on a different browser, laptop etc.

Step 3: Let’s get you some tokens to play on testnet!
1) As there is no integrated faucet in the wallet for testnet as it used to be for devnet (Airdrop), you need to utilize the testnet faucet in the official Sui Discord:
Use the invite https://discord.com/invite/sui to join the official Sui Discord.
2) Verify yourself by using the verify button and head to the testnet-faucet channel - indicated by the purple arrow:
Join the official Sui Discord Server, verify and claim your SUI tokens.
3) Use the following prompt: !faucet >your_sui_address<
Or in other words: Type in !faucet, followed by a space and your Sui address that you can copy-paste from your wallet.
4) In my case, I received 1 Sui Testnet almost instantly, but I know that some days ago the faucet were only good for 0.1 Sui.
5) You can repeat this process for other wallet address every 2 hours.
Testnet Wave 2 Use Case - An Overview 📝
Sui’s aspiration is to create a Layer 1 to onboard the next billion users - by providing a blockchain that is fast af, settles almost instantly, at low costs. Sui wants you to have assets on-chain and directly in your account, rather in someone’s smart contracts. Designed for maximum efficiency, Sui uses the proof of stake consensus algorithm.
So get ready for the Suinami 🌊 - but what’s being test now in Testnet Wave 2?
Wave 2 will test Sui’s tokenomics, including:
⏳ Epoch management – operations like staking/unstaking + staking reward distribution
⛽️ Gas mechanism – validators will participate in setting the reference gas price + in monitoring validator performance
🕹️ Testnet Wave 2 also features a pair of games designed to stress-test Sui’s tokenomics design and implementation.
Let’s look now into what you can test!
Test Case 1: Staking and Unstaking ⏳
Simply use the “Stake and Earn” button in your Sui Wallet and follow the steps. You can select a validator and start staking your SUI. Remember to be cautious which the amount of SUI that you stake as you might need the testnet tokens also for other use cases.
Play around a bit, choose maybe 2 or 3 validators, and unstake again if you wish.
But don’t that this exercise here too serious, as our next use cases will give us further possibilities to stake and unstake 🙂
Test Case 2: Frenemies Staking Game 🕹️
Frenemies is a game to test Sui’s staking functionality. To play, you stake tokens to support your assigned validator and compete to see who can top the leaderboard 🏆

Test Case 3: Sui Capys Game 🐮
Sui Caps is a fun NFT-based blockchain game, in which you can collect, dress and breed little cows.
Or according to Sui Caps: Capybaras!
So what you have to do is to pick a Capy, pick some clothes or accessories such as hats, shirts or … breed your Capys to get a baby! Sell your Capys on the marketplace or shop for new Capys or styles.
One of the first things when starting the game is to head to "My Collection" and then "Capys". You might want to refresh the page a couple of times or be patient until two greyed out Capys appear that are waiting for you to get minted.
I haven't been patient enough or didn't know that there are two Capys for free as a starter pack and so I went directly to the "Capy Market" to buy two cheap ones to start the game.
You will find all the Capys or clothes/accessories also in the NFT tab of your Sui Wallet.
Get your free Capy before you buy new Capys on the Capy Market.
When you head to your Capys (My Collection) and can also find further info on the traits such as pattern, ears or emotion, and which generation your Capy is. Gen 1 is your Starter Capy, and in my case, when I was breeding Gen 2 and Gen 2 (the Capys I bought on the Marketplace), the baby was Gen 4.
So all in all, Sui Caps is a fun way to play around a bit on Testnet - but I hope Sui will be a bit faster when they are live - as well as signing transactions for buying items should be instant and not always require the wallet interaction, as it’s slowing down the process. But I’m sure we will get there.
Test Case 4 (Bonus): Mint an NFT 🖼️
So this one is super simple and I doubt this will be eligible for an airdrop, but it only costs you a click:
Go to the Apps section of your wallet and look for the “Mint an NFT” button. Mint - that’s it.
If you have several wallets (such as Suiet for example), mint another one and send it to your other address. The Suiet Wallet gives you as well the opportunity to mint an NFT - so send the Suiet NFT to your Sui Wallet as a return 🙂
Let’s see if these Testnet NFTs will be rewarding us with some SUI Tokens later on …. as it happened with Aptos.
