Switch-In #002 - Sushi Strikers: The Way of Sushido

Sushi or No Sushi?

This addition to my physical Nintendo Switch collection (#019), has a funny story behind it:

Visiting Saturn, one of Europe’s biggest consumer electronics retailer, I found a copy of Sushi Strikers: The Way of Sushido - at a great discount. I did not know much about the game at this point, but I could remember that I watched a YouTube video from BeatEmUps on it:

Wood was discussing the relatively hefty price tag for the game and compared the contents that are waiting for you in a Super Mario Odyssey or Zelda or Breath of the Wild - at a similar price point that Sushi Strikers: The Way of Sushido is asking for. I also could re-call (OK, you got me, I quickly checked out the video on my phone directly in the store), that the game may be fun and it’s mostly puzzle action where you have to combine sushi plates of the same colour.

Mmh, I was not that convinced. I even made a picture and did sent it to my friend _videogame_nerd to ask for his opinion, but he was not that keen on the game either and recommended to not buy it.

No Sushi!

As I did not put Sushi Strikers: The Way of Sushido on my #SwitchList -my personal Nintendo Switch Wishlist- either, I decided to not buy the copy and left the store.

But unfortunately my decision did not leave me alone: The huge discount on a Nintendo published game (just €20 ~ $18), which is pretty rare, made me thinking the entire way back home. Finally home, I immediately watched some more gameplay videos and downloaded the demo. And I had to admit: The cutscenes made me smile a couple of times, the puzzle action was in a way motivating and kept me playing - I completed the entire demo.

I regretted to not have bought the game at such a big discount. I checked Saturn’s website if I could maybe buy the game directly online right now, but to my surprise Sushi Strikers: The Way of Sushido was way more expensive in Saturn's Online Shop. Now I regretted even more that I did get the game at the brick-and-mortar store some hours ago.

Something told me that I have to have Sushi Strikers: The Way of Sushido at this discounted price in my physical Nintendo Switch collection - otherwise I’ll always regret it or will remind myself to have missed such a bargain. But as you can see this game listed here, so you can imagine what’s coming next: Exactly!

Sushi! My Top 4 Lessons Learned

I went back to the store! Not the upcoming day as this was a Sunday and shops are usually closed in Germany, but the next working day. After work, I was lucky to snag the last copy in the store at this price point. To save me (and you) such an extra trip in case you will ever be in a similar situation, below I wrote up my top 4 learnings from this Sushi Strikers: The Way of Sushido purchase experience:

  1. Try to download and play demos, even when you are not that interested in what you heard about the game so far. This would have saved me the 2nd trip to the store.

  2. Go to physical stores and do not rely on online shopping experiences solely.

  3. Although it is the same store, the price for a game that you research online in the web shop can differ significantly from the price in the physical store itself.

  4. When being undecided in a store, ask the #SwitchCorps community on Twitter for advise!

I hope you felt a bit entertained and can take away something from my lessons.
